Some characters are rarer than others, I find. For example I work well with the Black Sheep(top score of 314 to prove it!), because of it's cubic and consistent shape and it's natural way of moving and I don't do well with the Fast Tortoise, because I find the way it moves distracting. Some characters you use could improve you performance, just because you like their noise, setting, the way they move or even shape. They are all the same size, even the Flea, so none have any kind of advantage when playing, but some do change the setting, shoot at nearby object, write random jokes onto the screen and make amusing noises. There are 72 characters in total (73 on Android), some, like the Hipster Whale, Gifty and Piggy Bank are not available from the prize machine and must be purchased(Piggy Bank) or found while playing, while another exception to the usual cost of purchase is the Festive Chicken, which is free, but you are required to type in your iTunes account's password, like you do when getting a free app. The first one you get is the Chicken, and others in no particular order, as you unlock them from the Prize Machine once you have collected 100 coins(see the Coins page that will soon be added for more information), you can also purchase them for $1.20(Aus) unless it's the Piggy Bank in which case it would set you back $4.99. But be warned! You can get he same character twice in the Prize Machine, and the coins you spent to look in the prize machine are not refunded. Characters are the mascots you play with.
